Personality and Appearance: Bold, outspoken, spirited, but oddly self-disciplined and an able teacher, Riayhon hardly fits the average person's ideal of what a Candidate should be.  Highly intelligent and while displaying an outward appearance of order and common courtesy, secretly this young man harbors a deep desire to find those responsible for his parents' demise and to be reunited with his younger brother Nairen, as his family was all but taken from him when he was younger.  Riayhon, or "Ryan" as he's been sometimes called, has a great wealth of experience with weaponry, strategy, and tactics, but also has some passing knowledge of seamanship as his father was an expert sailor and fisherman.  He also has a taste for the finer quality goods often found in noble houses, thanks in part to his mother's position within the Luxuries guild.  If there's one way to summarize this young man, he could be identified as a silently building storm ready to unleash its full fury on anyone who opposes him, yet the promise of stable waters to those who befriend him.

Fairly tall and at first glance lanky, Riayhon is anything but skin-and-bones; in fact, he's rather athletic but somewhat on the slim side.  His physique is practically feline-like in appearance, but don't let that fool you; he's a lot stronger and faster than he looks.  With a full head of brown hair that easily sways in a gentle breeze but kept trimmed, high forehead, blue eyes, thin nose, rounded chin and lips that on most days form a grin worthy of a scoundrel about to break someone's heart, Riayhon knows he's good looking but doesn't let that get to his head.

History:  Riayhon and his younger brother, Nairen, were typical boys growing up at Island River Hold when their father and mother took them downriver one afternoon and towards the open ocean.  Between their father's affiliation as a member of the Seacraft guild due to his expert sailing skills, and their mother's status as a minor noble merchant from the Luxuries guild, both boys were a bit spoiled due to their rather affluent upbringing.  Their father was one of the best sailors and fishermen in the entire Shan territory, while their mother often traded and dealt in high-quality and rare items.  To Rirhon and Aylena, it was nothing but the best money could buy for their two sons, including the best teachers at the Education Guild and the finest quality clothing and furnishings within their household.  This was what probably caught the attention of the various roving pirate bands that sailed the high seas near New Caledonia, and on one fateful day while sailing between the southern tip of the island and the Southern Continent, a group of pirates attacked the small fleet of shipping vessels including that of Rirhon's.  Riayhon and Nairen were practically shoved onto a small dinghy along with two sets of oars, two days' supply of provisions and fresh water, but their pleas fell on deaf ears as the lines were cut from the main craft and told to get to safety as quickly as possible.

It was painful to watch as the trading vessels were looted and then burned, but the desire for revenge burned just as strongly in Riayhon's heart. He vowed that he would find the pirates responsible for his parents' death, forcing him and his brother to become orphans.  Luckily for the young man, he knew enough about the various currents to get him and his younger brother back to shore and to the safety of the island, and back up river to return to their home.  But without parents, it wasn't much long after until Riayhon and his brother Nairen became wards of the Hold, taken in by Lord Holder Neratch and his wife, Lady Annisa.  Yet even more problems arose as Riayhon never got along with Neratch's and Annisa's child Neris, so when he was fourteen Turns the troubled and spirited young man was sent away to Shan Hold and under the watchful eye of the Captain of the Guards.

Tasked with menial work, Riayhon often chafed under the captain's heavy-handedness, and on more than one occasion spent a night in the stocks.  This didn't exactly break his spirit, but rather began to impart a sense of self-discipline into the young man as he grew tired of "tied to a short tether".  The captain's philosophy was a simple yet effective one, as he grew up around runnerbeasts - you had to break a stallion first so it could reach its full potential later.  Riayhon caught on, and a noticeable improvement could be seen in his attitude and his day to day performance.  Two turns later, he was promoted to an Instructor position and given the responsibility of training the new recruits.

It's often been said that life moves in circles, and for Riayhon his life would be turned upside down a second time several months after he turned seventeen.  A powerful earthquake struck the island, with Shan Hold bearing the brunt of the damage.  Many lives were lost that day including several guardsmen, one of whom pushed Riayhon out of the way from falling stones as part of the wall crumbled.  With little time to grieve for his fallen comrades, the young Instructor quickly gathered the recruits under his authority and began the long process of rebuilding.  Yet he was ill-prepared for one final life-changing moment about a month after the earthquake, as a Searchdragon from the nearby Weyr came calling along with its Rider, and identified Riayhon as a possible Candidate.  Unsure of what to do, Riayhon visited with the Captain for counsel, and was encouraged to accept the offer to become a Candidate.
