Considering the uniqueness of NCI Weyr, here is a list of all the different character and ranks playable at NCI Weyr:
Non-Weyr Characters:
Child - A child is the rank for any character who is newborn to five years of age.
Student - Students are any children who are between the age of five years and 14 years. If a student is Searched before then, they drop the rank of "Student" and become a "Candidate", though they will continue this required education at the Weyr.
Apprentice - Apprentices are new members to Guilds of at least 14 years of age.
Heir - An heir individual who is at least 14 years of age who is the child of a Lord/Lady Holder and who has been selected by their parents to take their place when the time comes. Heirs may also apprentice at a Guild, however they keep the rank of Heir. Heirs may also be Searched. What happens then is up to the family. Eventually, the Heir will become the next Lord/Lady Holder of that hold. (Rank is restricted.)
Journeymen - Journeymen are Guild Members who have acquired a significant amount of knowledge and are deemed capable of practicing their trade on their own. Most Journeymen are at least 18, though it has been granted to some individuals as young as 16. Some Guilds require a Journeyman or Journeywoman to serve the guild for a set number of years before they are allowed to 'leave' the Guild and return to 'civilian' life: that is, before they can settle down, have a family, and their own cothold. In the Education Guild, this rank is "Instructor".
Holder - A holder is any individual who is at least 18 years old, is not a rider, is not a ranked Holder (Lord/Lady Holder of a minor or major hold), an active Guild Member, or a candidate and who does not live in what is considered the Weyr. Most holders do have Guild experience, and their lives center around what that trade was, however some Guild trades are restricted to active members only. Most holders, therefore, are engaged in farming, building, baking, or in some other way providing a good that is considered necessary in order to live.
Lord/Lady Holder - A Lord/Lady holder is the person who is in charge of their Hold's territory, whether it is a major or minor Hold. Some minor Holds are beholden to a major Hold, however this is not always the case. (Rank is restricted.)
Master - A Master is someone in their Guild who has obtained the knowledge and skillset necessary for not only teaching the new apprentices, but also necessary to establish minor Halls in the Holds and finish educating the Journeymen of the trade. Masters are required to have been Journeymen at least 10 years and most do not obtain the rank until they are at least 40 years old. (Rank is restricted.)
Guild Master - A Guild Master is an elected Master who is in charge of the entire Guild. They are equivalent to the Lord/Lady Holders of the Holds and the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman of the Weyr. Their duties range from promotion approvals to approving new curriculum or getting rid of old curriculum, duty assignments, etc. (Rank is restricted.)
