Personality and Appearance: Gem is an odd sight with bleach blonde hair kept short and left to fall as it wishes (in an attractive mess) but his eyes are such a bright blue that they rival that of the skies on a clear bright blue day. His bronzed skin further adds to his odd looks, but has no permanent scarring as he has been a lucky lad in his fifteen years on Pern so far. Still a bit short in size, he only stands at 5 1/2 feet and is still rather gangly in build, but he will grow to an average height and fill out with muscle as he ages, taking on more of a resemblance of his father in features. Clothing of softer shades allows him to stay out of the way and not cause too much attraction to himself, as he would rather watch and listen to things over getting involved right away. With his life being spent on the mountain peaks of the Weyr, his clothing leans toward a variety of overshirts and thin tunics due to the windy altitude of his home. Only a necklace of his mother's graces his neck: a pendant of a dragon set in turquoise; to remember her attempt to flee the earthquake's wrath that took her and her dragon, a small hoop-like earring in his right ear of a coppery coloring to remember his father by who had died in that very same earthquake, his copper Betweening shortly after the dust settled, and a customary beltknife of very simple design at his right side just in case.
Gem is a rather quiet lad. As a matter of fact, he is the best listener one could ever meet and he always seems to know exactly what to say to make everything alright. With his constant smiling, rarely does a face not smile in return at the pure innocence one could possibly appear. Yet Gem is innocent. He is there to help and to be a friend and he somehow always shows up where he is needed the most even without knowing so. As obedient as the stars in their nightly appearances, he is never one to disobey an order and he is never one to turn down in offering to help either. He is an observer as well as an actor, happily watching a situation to see if it might require his attention before acting on his own will. Gem has yet to have much interest in the opposite sex, but he is still young and so it may be when he finally Impresses that he will find that trait in himself for he has a gut feeling that he will someday ride a dragon and follow in his parents’ footsteps, such a strong feeling that even in the numerous Hatchings that he has attended, he always steps away from the Sands looking forward to the next clutch that might hold his dragon in its eggs…
History: Gem was born Gemsonee to a pair of dragonriders, his father a descendant of the Northern refugees and his mother a descendant of the South. Gem was just a few moments earlier than his twin sister and thankfully, their birth did not cause their mother's death for she had had complications with them, but Faranth was watching and had other plans for the greenrider. Raised in the creche with his sister, Gem and Monee knew their parents well as they often visited or spent at least a mark out of the day with them. As Gem grew, he was ever the obedient one while his sister was the wild one. But they still shared a calmness between them that only siblings would know.
At just 12 years, Gem tried his hand at the Astronomy Guild by dogging one of the Weyr’s Journeymen, not wanting to wait until his 14th year for a chance at it and he was at that for nearly a year until he was Searched for a standing clutch, slipping him into Candidacy one year earlier than unSearched weyrbred children. Though he did not Impress that clutch, he was not to be defeated and happily looked forward to the next clutch.
He continued to Stand at every available clutch, officially Apprenticing in Astronomy as soon as he turned 14, but his goal in life was to follow in his parents’ footsteps and to become a Rider.
Then the earthquake struck in his 15th year and took away those Gem loved the most. His father had been buried beneath the rubble and his mother lost in an aftershock's rumble, copper and green Betweening forever after. It was then that Gem grew even closer to his sister who had taken the losses hard and in that past month since then, Gem has been about spreading his ever present cheer to all those that he can, hoping that things will get better in the end.
