Over 1000 years of inbreeding of the dragons have finally led to mutations. It was to be expected, wasn't it? Luckily, the only mutations so far seem to have been related to the hide colors. These mutations only apply to dragons, as the firelizards have been free to breed with any of their number all over the planet.
Golds
The golds are the queens of Pern's dragons, and it is no different at New Caledonia Island Weyr. They are the largest of the dragons and their hides range from a dark antique gold to a pale yellow gold. Golds are only flown by bronzes or browns, though the occassional copper might join in chasing if it is male. Coppers, however, almost never seem to win the Flight. In fact, a brown is more likely to win a flight than a Copper. A Gold's clutch ranges from 10-25 eggs, however the average seems to be about 12-15 eggs. Golds are only female and only Impress to females. Only a gold's rider can be Weyrwoman. Golds are the rarest of dragon colors.
Coppers
These male dragons are the part of the second largest dragons of the Weyr, as they can be larger or smaller than Bronzes. Despite their size, though, they still do not rank as the kings of the dragons, that honor still remaining with the bronzes. They will still rise to chase after any female, however. Coppers are intelligent, daring, independent, some to the point that they will readily do things without so much as consulting with their rider. They like to do things their way and need a strong hand to keep them in line. Their hides can be just about any blend of the bronzes and the golds, though they do always seem to have a slight red tint.
Bronzes
The bronzes are the 'kings' of Pern's dragons, in a manner of speaking. They are the are also considered the second largest, as they can be bigger or smaller than Coppers, and their hides can range from a brightly polished bronze to an almost black bronze and lack the red tint of a Copper. Bronzes will chase any female that rises. They are only male and only Impress to males, typically those who will be great leaders in the future. A bronze is typically the Weyrleader's dragon's color. Bronzes are third rarest, along with coppers.
Browns
Browns are the third largest dragons at NCI Weyr. Their hides can be a dark chocolate brown to a light tan brown. Like bronzes, browns will chase any female. Being of a medium size, browns are most definitly the workhorses of a weyr, and they tend to have a steadfast, patient nature. Browns are only male and will only Impress to males. The occasional brown's rider will fill a Weyrleader position, but mostly their leadership extends best to the wings. Browns are fairly common.
Coral
Coral dragons are unique in that their size ranges from that of a brown up to that of a copper. Corals are naturally thinner and more fragile than their traditionally colored siblings, however they have a great amount of speed to them as a result. Coral dragons are somewhat mottled in nature, their hides transiting from pinks and reds with occasional oranges and purples. Their wing sails, while the same thickness as any other dragon's wing sail, seem thinner due to their almost see-through nature. Corals do not have the metallic sheen of the three highest colors, but rather keep a very pale sheen like the smallest dragon, the Pearls, just enough to stick out from the browns, blues, and greens, but not enough to be ranking in nature. They are playful, flighty, though not flirty, and have a general down to Pern type of personality. Corals are especially known for their love of water, particularly the sea. Corals are female, Impress to either gender, and are infertile. A coral will rise about twice a year.
Blues
Blues are the fifth largest dragon at NCI Weyr. Their hides can encompass just about any shade of blue, from that of froze water to the deep, dark depths of a night sky. Blues only chase greens in Flights, leaving even the corals to their larger brothers. Blues tend to populate a good majority of the weyr, only greens being more populous. Blues are only male, and typically only Impress to Male, however the occasional blue has Impressed to a female.
Greens
Greens are the second smallest dragons at NCI Weyr. Like their blue brothers, their hide can include just about any shade of green. Greens rise about three times a Turn and can be chased and caught by any male dragon, except for a pearl. Greens are almost always female, but a male or two has appeared in recent clutches. These male greens almost always between shortly after Hatching, though no one knows why. Greens will Impress to either male or female riders. Some greens have clutched up to 7 eggs, consisting of mostly greens and blues. This tends to only occur only about once every few turns. It has not yet been determined why it happens.
Pearls
Pearls are the smallest of the dragons at NCI Weyr. Their hides range from a dark grey to almost white with an occasional pink undertone. They have a very light shine to them, but not quite to the extent of the metallics. Pearls never rise to mate or to chase. They seem to be equally male and female and Impress to an individual of their own gender. On average, one pearl occurs every two to three clutches. No single clutch has held more than one pearl. Pearls can be either male or female. They Impress to the youngest candidates available to them, almost never older than 14 turns. It is said that the reason Pearls never rise to mate is because of the young age of their riders at Impression, however no real explanation has been given for the lack of their sexual drive. Pearls are the most innocent, trusting of the dragons and seem to always see the good in everyone around them.
