Character Name: Mordad
Character Age: 17
Character Gender/Orientation: male hetero
Family:
Father: Daderon 49 journeyman printer guild
Mother:Morula 48, journeyman education guild, painter
Siblings: none
Birth Place: Shan Hold
Birth Date: 12.28
Rank:Candidate/apprentice engineer
Personality and Appearance: Mordad, called M by his friends, is a tall, gangly youth with long, reddish-brown, slightly wavy hair. His skin is pasty-pale from spending most of his time inside, and he looks perpetually underfed. His has a long narrow face with a nose to match. The only really remarkable thing about him is his eyes, which are bright copper, almost golden. He looks much shorter than he is because he habitually hunches his shoulders, as if he's expecting something to fall on his head at any moment. The palette of his apparel is drab, grays and browns mostly, and his clothes tend to hang off of him.
He's a real downer, there's no denying it. Mordad generally expects something awful to happen at any moment, to the point that he doesn't really enjoy it, even if he gets exactly what he wants. But he is extremely smart, gifted with language, mathematics and logic. Unfortunately, he is not similarly gifted socially, he tends to over analyze everything and is a bit of a loner. To those he does make friends with, he is actually very loyal, and is good a keeping secrets. He doesn't mind listening to problems, but don't expect advice, especially about emotional problems. Mordad is often clueless about the motives of others and he tends to question all his own decisions anyway. Probably because of depressive tendencies, he has a somewhat addictive personality, and may have problems with alcohol or drugs when he gets older. He's somewhat restless and not easily satisfied. Mordad enjoys reading and he's quite good at card tricks and sleight of hand.
History:
The only child of two crafters, you'd think a cute and precocious child like Mordad would get plenty if attention, even be spoiled. But his parents were so wrapped up in each other and their careers that they had little time for him. As a youngster, he was constantly trying to be the best, to do something that would earn their attention and praise. Being quite bright, he excelled in his studies, but the praise of his teachers could only partly replace the love of his parents. By the time he was a teenager, he was already bitter and jaded. He kept thinking that there had to be something more to life, something better, but there never was. He went into the engineering guild at fourteen because that was what people said he should do, and though he was good at it, it brought him no joy.
At 16, finally, he thought the higher calling he had longed for had finally come. A Searchdragon came and offered him Candidacy at the Weyr. To be a dragonrider, wouldn't that just fulfill all his hopes? But after his first Hatching ended in disappointment, he fell into depression again, and the death of the queen and the earthquake certainly didn't help. Now that the Hatching approaches again, his hopes are slightly elevated even as he braces himself for what he feels is inevitable disappointment.
