Shan Peak Shan Peak is the largest mountain on the Island, named after the first Weyrleader, Shane of Bronze Havarth. Shan Peak is primarely plantless as the side of the mountain has had caves carved into it to serve as weyrs for the non-Weyrling riders. This is where most riders live and it serves as the center for most of the Weyr's activity, housing the main dining facilities as well as the leadership's offices and guest quarters.

(6.10) About the Youngsters (R'sten, Micaela) by Micaela May 13, 2013 12:13:28 GMT -5 |
New Hope Peak New Hope Peak is one of the shorter mountains on the island, though it's still a good size, being more stout than it is tall. It's centered near the middle of the island and has a large lake that takes up most of the top portion. On one side of the lake are the weyrling barracks for the younger weyrlings. On the other side of the lake are the canddiate barracks. The lake turns to a river which eventually becomes a waterfall. The river that it flows into below goes both from the peak and into it, where it stops in a large cavern holding a small cool water lake. Around that lake are a variety of small hot springs. A passage from that cavern leads to another cavern on the other side of the peak which houses the Hatching sands, heated by the hot springs below the ground. The largest weyr on this peak belongs to whichever dragon's rider who's dragon is occupying the sands at the time. Other smaller weyrs are found on the peak's sides, however these are for the older weyrlings and weyrlings who are waiting to turn 16 and not full riders. Residency Peak Residency Peak is home to all the individuals who support the Weyr, be they Guild members or simply non-riders. It's the second smallest formally occupied peak on the island and basically looks like the holds, though it is in fact part of the Weyr. Residency Peak offers all the same amenities as Shan Peak, however on a much smaller scale as they are for informal events. This peak also houses the Weyr's human and dragon Infirmaries. Minath's Peak Minath's Peak is the site where golden Minath, New Caledonia's first Queen, betweened during a threadfall. The peak itself is the smallest peak on the island and is entirely unoccupied. It is, however, utilized for training and storage, holding the overflow materials that riders might need. It has a ledge that houses the cows and other beasts sent there for hunting by the dragons, where they are allowed to free graze and are supplied with a small, rain-fed lake, though the ledge itself is fenced. |

The Other Peaks and Cliffs The rest of the peaks on the island are unnamed and not formally occupied, though there are caves and weyrs to be found on most every peak and cliff on the island. The exception to this is the peak furthest north on the island, which houses the Astronomy Guild and the stones the Weyr uses to predict Thread Fall, quite similar to the Star and Finger Stones of the North. Shan Hold The island's largest hold sits at the base and in the foot hills of Shan Peak. Like it's towering neight, it was named after the original Weyrleader of the Island. Shan Hold covers the largest amount of the island, going from the eastern to western shores and covering most of the middle area. There are eight minor holds beholden to Shan Hold.

The Cascading Lakes The Cascading Lakes are the pride and joy of the Shan Hold territory. Located south of Shan Hold proper, they are a series of lakes which start in the mountains and move down to the foot hills on the east side of those mountains before eventually joining a large lake which drains out to the ocean on the west. They also include many mini-waterfalls, thus the name "Cascading Lakes". A cave above one of these lakes also serves as an alternative weyr for the senior gold pair when they are not staying at Shan Peak. |

The Wilds With such a large area, not all of the island is actually occupied. There are open plains, rain forests, hills, mountains...pretty much anything except deserts to explore here. In some places, there are knooks which have been set up as small cot holds or hide-away holds. The possibilities here are endless. |

Sydir Lake Sydir Lake is the islands largest, and deepest, lake. It lies below sea level and as such is fed by both the ocean and a smaller lake from a nearby mountain. It's partially salt water and, with no outlet, is prone to flooding. There is, however, good fishing in the lake and even better sailing and swimming weather, as the surface recieves only light winds. |

Miner Hold While Miner Hold is the second oldest hold on the island, it is also the smallest hold, nestled deeply in a valley beneath the mountains of the northern part of the island. It strongly resembles the Holds of the north, almost every building having been carved into the side of the mountains surrounding it. Miner Hold's primary production is anything that needs to be mined. While there are only two offical minor holds beholden to Miner Hold, there are a number of mining outposts throughout the mountains of the north. Miner Hold also has ownership of the two remaining hoverscrafts, which are used as transport to and from the mining outposts and are maintained by the Engineering Guild.

The Rift The Rift is a long canyon which starts on the western coast and moves south east until its almost to the middle of Miner Hold territory. Originally, the Rift was comprised of hills and low lying mountains, however these were destroyed and replaced by the canyon following the 1164 earthquake. Now, it is filled with water. Swimming here is highly discouraged, as there are many rip currents, rocks, and other hazards, and so the area is technically considered off limits. However, some of the island's youth consider cliff diving into the Rift a Rite of Passage for those who survive. |
