Personality and Appearance: Marik is often viewed as a perfect balance between his mother and father when it comes to both his looks and his personality. His brown hair is kept short but otherwise easily stirs in a breeze, and his medium blue irises are thought of as "in the middle" between his father's flaxen-colored hair and blue-grey irises, and his mother's jet black hair and sapphire blues. His skin has a bit of a tan to it, the result of many a warm day spent outdoors playing with other young children his age. Even though he's still a young, active, and healthy boy, already he's pushing four-and-a-half feet in height but isn't stocky or thin.
Marik, surprisingly, isn't very unruly but is rather very respectful of his elders and is a very astute learner. He doesn't come across as a 'know-it-all', but he is very intelligent and bright for a boy for his age. On the other hand, he can be your typical boy: daring, and a little adventurous, both of which has gotten him into a bit of trouble every now and then either of his own accord or with others.
History: Marik was the firstborn son to Mathias and Marika, even though his father had several children from a previous marriage with only three daughters surviving to adulthood. Because he was the first male child born healthy, Marik was often coddled and closely guarded as if being protected from the very environment in which he grew up. Oddly, this coddling didn't make him to become a spoiled brat, but rather helped to foster a respect and love for his parents and siblings. Even when his younger brother, Amrathas, was born two Turns later, Marik hardly ever got into a fight with Amrathas as both boys were doted upon by their mother.
Growing up near the sea, Marik could swim well before he took his first few tenative steps on the land. Being exposed to the sea early on meant that Marik would always appreciate the beauty and the power of the waves, even when fostered out to his sister's Hold at the age of eight. What he didn't expect was that the following Turn, he would be Searched by the Riders from New Caledonia Weyr. At first Marik wasn't sure about the idea of becoming a Candidate, but his older half-sister reminded the young boy that their father was a staunch ally of the dragonmen, and therefore she didn't forsee any major difficulties with the decision he was going to make. That convinced Marik to accept, and was transferred to the Weyr.
Shortly before his tenth Turn-day, an earthquake rocked the entire region. The Weyr took the brunt of the quake, resulting in a number of losses including many Candidates, weyrfolk, and Riders. Worst of all, both the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman were killed, and the most recent clutch from Gold Hipath also suffered some losses as seven eggs were crushed by falling rocks. Marik was fortunate enough to escape with some minor scrapes, and he couldn't have been happier to find out his own father was sending supplies and aid to the stricken Weyr.
