Personality and Appearance: Mathias is a highly respected individual known for his wisdom, his even-mannered temper, and above all, his dedication to those under his rule. His love for the sea, combined with the many Turns he has devoted to his craft, has not only allowed him to mature into an able-bodied sailor and expert swimmer, but a true master of the seas. He is also an avid swordsman and rider, having learned the required skills in his younger days. Mathias is also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, never one to spare any expense when it comes to giving gifts to celebrate his wife's, a child's, or grandchild's Turn day.
He is of above average height (about 5'10") but isn't necessarily stocky or thin, but he does have a well-defined muscle tone. His long flaxen-colored hair extends just below his shoulders, but it has already begun turning grayish white. A gray-white moutee frames his lips and chin. Blue-gray irises stare out from underneath eyebrows with high arches. His skin is touched by the sun, but instead of wrinkled from exposure it is instead caused by his advanced age. Mathias speaks with a deep, smooth voice; he prefers loose-fitting clothing as he's never far from his work, but he'll dress for formal occasions when executing his lordly duties. He doesn't mind opulence either, just as long as it's not excessive or gaudy.
History: Out of five children borne to Lord Anithias and Lady Malorine, Mathias is the eldest living child; as the first two children died in infancy. He always had a close relationship with his youngest sister Lorena; a friendly but not personal relationship with Marena. Mathias was fostered out to Nyta Hold at age eight; there he learned husbandry, woodworking and swordsmanship. He also developed a fondness for the 'finer things in life' as would befit a son of a Lord Holder and heir to the lordship. He proved himself to be excellent student but had a few scuffles with some of the other boys after being bullied on more than one occasion. Mathias returned to Sydir Hold at twelve Turns to begin formally begin apprenticeship as a shipbuilder in the Seacrafting Guild. During his apprenticeship, Mathias saw his first dragon but he wasn't Searched. He thought it was rather odd for a beast to be able to discern if someone possessed any special abilities, but chose not to poke fun at the thought either. His life's work was the sea, after all, not to become a dragonrider. In Turn 1117, Mathias walked the tables to receive his journeyman knots. A Turn later in 1118, he was witness to another Searching, but again he wasn't Searched.
Mathias would later marry Emilina, the daughter of a Holder from a minor Hold, in Turn 1120. Their marriage produced three daughters: Meliana in Turn 1125; Ameilia in Turn 1127; Iliana in Turn 1131. Two other children - both sons - were stillborn in Turns 1135 and 1138 respectively. The lack of a male heir and the two stillbirths left many wondering, including Lord Anithias and Lady Malorine, if this would signal the end of a lasting dynasty founded by Anithias' ancestors. A third attempt at producing a male heir resulted in both a stillbirth and a tragic passing of Emilina in 1140. After the traditional Turn of mourning, Mathias focused on his daughters and did his best to raise them on his own with some help from the Hold's Headwoman, as his parents were approaching old age. He would later be crowned as Lord Holder of Sydir Hold after both of his parents passed away in 1144. Not wanting to observe the customary tradition of mourning for an entire Turn, instead Lord Mathias began to open the lines of communication between Sydir Hold and New Caledonia Weyr. Officials from the Weyr had visited Sydir Hold on more than enough occasions and not just for Search, but as the Hold's docks were a part of a crucial sea route, Mathias worked hard to gain favor with the Weyr's leadership, and soon became a strong ally of New Caledonia.
In 1145, Mathias encountered the most beautiful young woman he had ever seen. Although she could never replace Emilina, and the fact she appeared to be no more than three Turns older than his youngest daughter, he was rather surprised to learn this particular young woman was born in the very same Hold as he was. After having some of his most trusted advisors making inquiries, Mathias soon learned her name: Marika. Her father was a vintner, her mother a Harper. While flattered by the overtures, Marika's parents' fears were soon put to rest as Mathias gave them his word he would treat their daughter with nothing but love, devotion, and respect. Upon this, they accepted the dowry he had paid them, and agreed to have her wed to him within two Turns in an arranged marriage, which took place in Turn 1147.
Meliana and Ameilia were both unreceptive of their new stepmother but gradually learned to accept her; Iliana, on the other hand, openly embraced Marika and continues to call her "Mother" to this day. At first Marika was unhappy with the arranged marriage, but her husband wouldn't give up so easily, taking his time to romance his bride every day. In time, Mathias and Marika celebrated the birth of their firstborn son Marik in 1154; followed by a second son, Amrathas, in 1156.
When the earthquake struck early in 1164; many people were tragically lost, but Sydir Hold somehow was spared the brunt of the quake's effects. The shipbuilding yards were relatively untouched, and Lord Mathias made every effort to bring in as many supplies from the sea routes as possible, sending many caravans laden with supplies to Shan, Nyta, and Miner Holds; and to New Caledonia Weyr. The loss of the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman at New Caledonia was a shock to Lord Mathias, but he resolved to work with the surviving dragonriders out of respect for the late leaders, and to honor the bond between Sydir and New Caledonia. That bond had already been reinforced when his eldest son, Marik, was Searched and was now a Candidate at the Weyr; and there was no way Mathias was going to let his son nor anyone else down.
