Personality and Appearance:
Adara is a petite girl, about 5'1", and fine-boned. Her skin is very pale, as if she rarely goes outside, and her straight hair, dark as a crow's wing, is cut just at her chin. She has wide, childlike eyes that are clear, pale gray. Adara's face is both serious and innocent, and also slightly sad, but her eyes burn with intelligence and determination. She's is a neat and conservative dresser, and usually sticks to black, gray, and white.
Quiet is the first word most people would use to describe Adara. She rarely speaks out in public unless asked a direct question, and even then her voice hardly goes above a whisper. She's also extremely smart, brilliant really, and will work extremely hard to achieve her goals, regardless of personal cost. But she would never hurt anyone and extremely perceptive of the emotions of others. Despite her shyness, she has a strong nurturing instinct, gravitating to people or animals that are hurt or suffering. Though she seems cautious and nervous, she has a core if bravery and loyalty that makes her willing to take risks and even sacrifice herself for those she loves. Because of her parents, she is determined to settle for nothing less than true love.
History:
Adara was the second child of her parents, much younger than their son Carane. Though the two crafters had initially married for love, perhaps because of their large age difference and contrasting percolates, by the time Adara was five or so, they quite detested each other. Carad retired from the engineering guild when his older brother died without leaving any heirs, and took over the family cothold. His wife and children moved there with him somewhat unwillingly. However, Carane and Adara were close, and they grew to enjoy the peace and quiet of the outdoors, and often hiked and picnicked when they weren't helping with the crops or animals. Aranea wasn't often at home, spending most of her time at the Astrinomy Guokd, and both of their parents had always been distant.
When Adara was eight and Carane was 14, he was Searched for the Weyr. Adara was excited for him, and their parents indifferent, but she was sad to be left alone. Still, her brother promised that he would bring her to the Weyr when she was old enough, and they could be dragonriders together. But it was not to be. At the next Hatching, Carane was fatally mauled by a bronze hatchling when he couldn't get out of the way fast enough. The brown dragonet that had been approaching immediately went between. Adara was crushed, but she was surprised to discover that he parents were also shattered by the loss. Grief united the family for a while, which helped Adara to recover, but her parents began blaming each other and soon grew apart again. They became overprotective of their daughter, yet still emotionally aloof. She was now hardly allowed to leave their cothold, and she knew they would never allow her to go to the Weyr.
But she never gave up. She studied constantly, excelling at the everything the Education Guild had to teach her. And in her free time she learned everything she could about dragons and tried her best, covertly, to also increase her physical strength, since she knew dragonriding was hard on the body. When she turned 14, her parents refused to let her take a craft, which was somewhat disappointing, since she had thought to finally get away form them. But as luck would have it, a Searchdragon came just six months later. Adara was overjoyed to receive her Search token, but her parents were furious. They sent the dragonrider away and told him never to rerun. Two turns passed, and Adara grew more and more desperate as no more dragonriders came. Finally, she came to the breaking point. One night, she snuck out of the Hold and made her way, walking and hitching rides on wagons, to the Weyr.
They were hesitant to let her in, but she told her story and luckily the Searchrider remembered her, so she was permitted to remain as a Candidate.
